Conflict is a process in which one party perceives that its interest are being opposed or negatively affected by another party. But conflict is ultimately based on perceptions, so it also exists whenever one party believes that another may obstruct its efforts, whether or not the other party actually intends to do so. There are lots of conflicts in this movie- The Dark Knight. Characters faced conflict once troubles or problems happened as everyone has their own concern and idea which is sometime the same but sometime not the same. There are also conflicts when corporation or collective decision is needed because of the overlap of personal and group interest. Conflict between Bruce Wayne and Batman (self-conflict) Conflict process: Sources of conflict: A) Incompatible goals: 1) Bruce Wayne believed that he could beat all the criminals and alter the world by donning a mask and a cape to become Batman. However, it is impossible to do this with only personal power and is unreasonable to achieve such goal as world must consists of bad and good guys. It is impossible to stop people committing crimes through violence but without hurting or killing the criminals once they commit it and without solving the deep-rooted problem. (Bruce Wayne indeed hates Joker and even wants to kill him but he never do that due to his moral values. ) B) Ambiguous rules: There is no clear and definite rule on how Batman should do to alter the world. All actions are made depended on how Batman values them. Conflict Emotions: Batman felt extremely angry and nervous when he could not stop Joker from killing one of his friends, Harvey Dent or Rachel Dawes. Batman has to decide who he is going to save. Manifest Conflict: Quick and immediate decision is needed. Conflict Outcome: Batman chose to save Harvey as he was the bright knight and hope of the city while he left his lover, Rachel, alone. This conflict handling is compromising which is the worst choice as only one can be saved. Since the power of Batman and Joker are more or less equal and a quick and immediate solution is needed (as there is a timer on the bomb), compromising is the only solution. Conflict within two groups of people on boats loaded with explosives Conflict process: Sources of conflict: A) Incompatible goals: Moral and right to live VS self-interest on owns life: Everyone hope to save people on both boats, but there is only two choices- both boats will explode at midnight or one press the detonator, the other boat will explode while keep itself alive (each of them has a detonator of another boat). Moreover, if anyone leave the boat, all people will die. B) Task interdependent: Individual: Everyone could voice out their choice as they are as a group, die together or live together. Group: Since each of them has a detonator of another boa, the lives on two boats are dependent on whether the people on other boat press the detonator. Or they may die together when time is up. C) Communication problem: Each group: There are too many people and can’t hear everyone’s opinions and discuss the issue at the same time. Two groups: They can’t communicate with the others due to the breakdown of the communication device. They don’t know what the other think and what is their decision. Manifest Conflict: Boat A: Write down their choice on a paper and vote for the choices. Boat B: Do not press the detonator and do not vote. Just shout out their opinion in a crowd. Conflict Outcome: Although boat A got 396 â€Å"yes† for pressing the detonator and 140 â€Å"no†, they finally did not press it as after they thought deeply, their moral won their self-interest. (We’re still here. That means they haven’t killed us either. ) Both groups think that they have the right to live but it is same to the others (they think moral and right to live is more important than personal interest). Therefore, both groups have not press the detonator and wait until the assigned time limit. They decided to lay back and let it be.
